Indaba has always been South Africa’s leading business-to-business tourism event, and while I think it may be premature to call WTM Africa the leading event in Africa, I do think it has the potential to be real competition for Indaba. I don’t see international buyers coming to two trade events a month apart, so unless one of them emerges as the clear not-to-miss event, the competition between the two will probably dilute visitor numbers to both events. Will they each specialise and evolve into their own niche event? Or will one or the other emerge as the clear leader and the not-to-miss tourism trade show, for those who will only attend one of the two? Indaba has seen many complaints over the last few years and had better shape up and perform this year if it doesn’t want to lose a huge chunk of visitors and exhibitors to WTM Africa.
