By Iva Cannon

Spring is the time to remember to fill those baskets with trinkets, candy and goodies for all of the youngsters you know. Easter picture books for children also make great gifts for all of the little ones on your list. There are so very many story lines and themes that a parent or well-meaning friend can choose from. Write out the names and ages of all the youngsters that you will be buying for and then begin your shopping excursion.

Heavy cardboard versions are wonderful for all of the toddlers on your list. The words are short but sweet and the story line very simple. They can also have unique features that allow these small ones to feel with their tiny but inquisitive hands. The soft fur of a tiny rabbit, the rough back of a box turtle, and the soft coat of a baby calf can all come alive through touch when special textures are used on the pages of illustrations.

Large editions with heavily illustrated pages of characters will provide wonderful and thoughtful gifts for the preschoolers and other little ones who may have just started school. In the time period before this holiday, be sure to read to them every single night at bedtime. They will have fond memories of these special times when they get older. It will also increase their imaginative capacities and creativity.

Simple versions can be purchased that elementary school students will find very easy to read. There is such a wide selection of themes such as humor, adventure, and true stories to flip through and read by themselves. The illustrations will give them cues that assist with their vocabulary. Older brothers and sisters can read aloud to younger siblings and practice their new found skills and promote bonding between family members.

Select more expensive and quality volumes to decorate your home. Open slightly and prop on side tables, in entrance halls, and on coffee tables for a wow factor. Display them right along with colored eggs and fresh tulips for a very unique look. Seek the most colorful and the most beautifully illustrated types for the most impact.

Bunny rabbits seem to be the main theme of most of these holiday volumes as well as baby lambs and chicks. Accompany the gift with stuffed animals to match the reading materials inside the pages. Better yet, purchase hand puppets to make the stories and rhymes come alive.

Religious works are also available. They tell the story of this wondrous holiday and how it came about. They explain that bunnies and colored eggs are not the most important things of the Sunday that it is celebrated. The family can actually read one of these stories at their holiday feast to help remind all of what they are truly celebrating.

Buying these very special items will show that you care about these youngsters. They are personal gifts that speak to the heart especially if you have gone to the time and effort of choosing the absolutely perfect ones for the special little ones in your life. Wrap them as gifts or, if they are small enough, tuck them into a woven basket with other holiday treats and toys. After this holiday is over, pack them up and take out the ones you have stored for the summer months.
