Yes of course it is part of the Colorado River System–by virtue of originating in Colorado. However, the Animas flows south–affecting New Mexico and the Navajo Nation–and is not part of the Colorado River that flows west through the Colorado River Basin into Utah, Nevada and California. At no time do the Animas and the Colorado ever intersect or even come close to the Colorado River. I live here and have paddled both rivers and fished and hiked both river systems for more than 20 years. Thank you.
