Brazil may rank 1st in South America . Not surprising with both World Cup and Olympics coming within 2 years of eachother. And in terms of landmass/natural attractions no other S American country comes close. However these statistics hide the woeful performance of government departments in promoting the country as a whole and tourism as a viable industry. Seems impossible that a country of this size and natural beauty attracts only just over 6million tourists, but it seems any marketing activity for tourism in Brazil has been totally abandoned outside big events which sell themselves.
